How to Install CWM recovery and root Sony Xperia Z2

We all are very well aware about the new device from Sony named Xperia Z2. Though this device is very high in specs but when it comes to taking the highness at its peak then rooting comes into play. Rooting, custom recoveries, custom ROMs, mods and all things fun and bring lot to your device. It all starts with the installation of custom recovery or unlocking the boot loader in few devices like Z2 and ends with rooting. There’s a great community of developers making custom ROMs for various Android devices and the Xperia Z2 being a flagship device for 2014 means you’ll have a handful lot of custom ROMs available to flash, try and have fun with after getting rooted. So as we know that before rooting any device one has to install custom recovery on it so to ease your job we have provided blow both the procedure i.e. of rooting and installing custom recovery on Sony Xperia Z2.

Note – This procedure is only for Xperia Z2 with model no. D6502/D6503.

Warning – Following the below procedures will void the warranty of your device permanently and you’ll be unable to get any support under warranty.

How to Install CWM recovery on Sony Xperia Z2

Preparations

  • Confirm that your Sony Xperia Z2 is on Android 4.4.2 firmware version 17.1.A.2.36 – v01. If not, then do not proceed.
  • Backup important stuffs of your device
  • You must have proper and working driver installed on your windows computer to be able to successfully install custom recovery on your device.
  • Use must first unlock the boot loader on your Sony Xperia Z2 before proceeding with the guide.
  • Download the one click CWM installer zip file and transfer the file to a separate folder on your computer to keep things tidy.

Procedure

Step 1- Enable developer options on your device. For this go to your phone’s Settings » select about phone » Scroll to the bottom and tap on “Build number” seven times to enable developer options

Step 2 – Enable USB Debugging and to do this open phone’s Settings » select Developer options » Tick the “USB debugging” check-box (under Debugging section).

Step 3 – Connect your phone to PC with a USB cable and if a pop-up screen shows up on phone asking you to Allow USB debugging for the computer, make sure you tick the checkbox and tap OK.

Step 4 – Extract the installer file ‘CWM Recovery for Sony Xperia Z2.zip‘toget the following files, and one folder:

  • api (folder)
  • 1-click-CWM-recovery-installer.bat
  • adb.exe
  • AdbWinApi.dll
  • AdbWinUsbApi.dll
  • fastboot.exe
  • Z2_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-4.4.2_17.1.A.2.36.img
  • source.properties

Step 5 – Double-click or Run the ’1-click-CWM-recovery-installer.bat’ file and follow the simple on-screen instructions like to install CWM recovery on your Sony Xperia Z2.

Step 6 – Once the CWM recovery is flashed successfully on your Sony Xperia Z2, your device will automatically reboot but now it will have CWM recovery installed on it.

How to Root Sony Xperia Z2

As there are two recoveries that a device can have so below given are two different procedures for different recoveries.

Preparations

  • Backup important stuffs of your device
  • You must have CWM or TWRP recover Installed on your device.
  • Download the SuperSU zip file and transfer it to a separate folder on your phone’s internal / external SD Card.

For CWM recovery users

Step 1- Boot your device into recovery mode. For this:

  • Switch off your Xperia Z2
  • Switch it back on and the time when you see your phone’s LED notification light turn Pink! (Or any other color) — start pressing either the Volume UP or Volume down key a couple of times to make your phone boot into recovery mode

Step 2 – Create a Nan droid Backup from recovery. It’s optional but very important so that in case something goes wrong you can restore to current status easily. For making a Nan droid Backup, go to Backup and Restore » Backup.

Step 3 – Flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.xx.zip file. For this, select Install zip » Choose zip from SD card » browses to the location where you saved the file and select the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.xx.zip

Step 4 – Go back to the main menu of recovery and select reboot system now to reboot.

For TWRP recovery users

Step 1- Boot your device into recovery mode. For this:

  • Switch off your Xperia Z2
  • Switch it back on and the time when you see your phone’s LED notification light turn Pink! (Or any other color) — start pressing either the Volume UP or Volume down key a couple of times to make your phone boot into recovery mode

Step 2 – Create a Nan droid Backup from recovery. It’s optional but very important so that in case something goes wrong you can restore to current status easily. For this, go to Backup » and select all check boxes and swipe on the Swipe to confirm option at the bottom of the screen to confirm backup.

Step 3 – Flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.xx.zip file. For this, tap on Install » browse to the location where you saved the files and tap on the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.xx.zip file. Now at the bottom of the screen, do a swipe on the Swipe to confirm flash option to begin flashing.

Step 4 – Reboot your device now. For this go back to the main menu of recovery and tap on Reboot » then, tap on System to reboot your phone.

This is all what one has to do to get his/her Z2 rooted and after rooting their device one can get the most out of it.
